What Is World Smart?
World Smart provides opportunities for underrepresented high school students to expand their horizons through studying abroad and was born from a passion for education and the way traveling to new places cultivates opportunities for learning. World Smart not only enriches students, but also provides the foundation for healthier communities and a stronger economy by producing globally minded leaders.
The United States has increasingly fallen behind the rest of the world in cultural immersion programs. Approximately 1,200 American high school students studied abroad in 2012 compared to more than 30,000 foreign students who studied in the U.S.
Having study abroad experience helps students stand out on college applications because universities value diversity and culturally aware students. In an increasingly global society, studying abroad helps build valuable language skills through immersion, the most effective method of learning a language. Studying abroad also makes students aware of the social, political, and economic issues facing our society and learn more about themselves, their values, and what their career goals will be. Students also develop self-reliance and leadership skills which are invaluable when embarking on a collegiate career away from home.
How Is It Different?
World Smart partners with businesses that seek diverse, culturally aware talent to provide opportunities for students to study abroad. These partnerships make it possible for students to have access to funding, removing the most common limiting factor in studying abroad, cost.
In exchange, students share their talents with businesses within the local economy. As interns, they will develop skills necessary to succeed in today’s workforce. World Smart participants will also have access to language tutoring and a rigorous pre-departure curriculum to prepare them for the experience of studying abroad.
